Department
of Animal and Range Sciences
The
Animal BioSciences Facility will provide a modern collaborative
environment for dynamic instruction and research programs from leading
scientists in the animal and range sciences. Project goals are to
design an enduring facility that celebrates and sustains Montana's
rich heritage in animal agriculture and natural resources; fosters
an open, interactive environment for learners and educators; and
promotes a multi-disciplinary seamless approach to instruction,
research, and extension.
This facility
will be unique to Montana and the region by providing new frontiers
for discovery in science and education in the animal and range sciences,
and in the potential application of new knowledge in molecular biology
to animal agriculture.

Department
of Research Centers
During
the 2001 Montana legislative session, the Director for the
Montana Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) requested $6
million dollars to improve facilities and initiate renovation
projects at the seven Research Centers. These Centers are
located away from the main campus (Bozeman) and serve the
production and economic interests of farmers and ranchers
within the unique geography and climatic regions of the state
through applied research. In order to continue the excellent
applied work throughout the state, this infrastructure must
be maintained.
The Montana
Legislature provided $1 million dollars to MAES to help with
the construction and repair of buildings and existing facilities.
The caveat was that in order to receive these monies, the
MAES needed to obtain a match for each of the $1 million dollars
available. This would potentially result in a funding total
of $2 million dollars. We have initiated our campaign, "A
Million Dollars is a Terrible Thing To Waste" throughout
Montana to address facility problems at Southern (Huntley),
Eastern (Sidney), Northern (Havre), and Northwestern (Creston).
As of September, 2004, we have $820,000 raised! Your support
is appreciated.

Biobased Products Institute
The future
of plant and animal agriculture is to enhance the value of the raw
commodity in Montana through a variety of market development, alternative
uses of existing and new products, coupled with manufacturing and
processing innovations. These approaches require integrated multi-disciplinary
efforts to add value to the high quality traditional raw products
that Montana is internationally known. These collective aspirations
will come together over the next several years as we develop on-going
and cultivate new partnerships to make this unique Institute, a
reality with connections in Bozeman as well as throughout the state
utilizing existing research center and private sector infrastructure.
